What We Learned After Asking 7 Kombucha Drinkers to Blind Taste Two Kombuchas
Share
Every kombucha brand says it's different. But can people actually taste the difference? But instead of making claims ourselves, we wanted to ask a simple question:
Can people actually taste the difference?
To find out, we invited seven regular kombucha drinkers to participate in a blind taste test.
No labels.
No branding.
No hints.
Just two cups labelled Sample #1 and Sample #2.
How We Conducted the Blind Taste Test
Each participant sampled:
- Sample #1
- Sample #2
They weren't told which brand they were tasting until the very end.
After trying both samples, we asked:
- Which sample did you prefer?
- Why?
- What differences did you notice?
The goal wasn't to prove one kombucha was "better."
It was to understand what people naturally notice when comparing two different kombuchas without brand influence.

What We Heard
Although every participant described the drinks differently, several themes appeared repeatedly.
Sample #1
Participants described Sample #1 using words such as:
- "Alcohol."
- "Flavoured sparkling water."
- "Bland."
These reactions showed that people often pay attention to aroma, body and flavour development—not just sweetness or fizz.
Sample #2
Sample #2 generated noticeably different reactions.
Comments included:
- "Wow."
- "This tastes more natural."
- "Refreshing."
- "Well made."
- "I like this one better."
Interestingly, several participants mentioned the flavour before discussing sweetness or carbonation.
One Observation That Surprised Us
We expected participants to talk mainly about fizz.
Instead, many focused on:
- aroma
- tea character
- natural fruit flavour
- overall balance
- how the drink felt to drink
This reminded us that taste isn't just about carbonation.
People experience kombucha using all their senses.
Why We Chose a Blind Taste Test
When people recognise a brand, expectations naturally influence perception.
That's why we removed:
- labels
- bottles
- branding
Every participant judged the drinks based only on what they experienced in the cup.
The Reveal
Only after everyone had shared their thoughts did we reveal:
Sample #1
Commercial store-bought kombucha.
Sample #2
WiskTea Recipe Kombucha - Passion Fruit Kombucha
For us, the most valuable outcome wasn't which sample participants preferred.
It was listening to why they preferred it.
What Makes WiskTea Recipe Different?
WiskTea Recipe Kombucha is brewed with an emphasis on traditional fermentation and carefully selected ingredients.
Across its range of flavours, you'll find:
- Real tea
- SCOBY culture
- Real fruits, herbs or botanicals (depending on the flavour)
- No artificial colouring
- No artificial sweeteners
- No preservatives
- Original Tea Series Kombucha
- Fruit Series Kombucha
- Floral Series Kombucha
- Coffee Series Kombucha
- Jamu Series Kombucha (New)
Rather than relying on advertising claims, we believe the best way to understand kombucha is simply to taste it.
Our Biggest Takeaway
One lesson stood out above everything else.
People can often describe what they experience—even if they don't know the brand.
Without seeing a label, participants naturally talked about:
- flavour
- aroma
- balance
- freshness
- overall drinking experience
That tells us something important.
Great kombucha isn't just recognised by its label.
It's recognised by its taste.
